DESCHOOLING OUR LIVES

In 1996 I put together a collection of deschooling pieces, as a kind of reader, or primer, for people interested in alternatives to school. The book looks at free schools, home and unschooling and the theoretical and historical bases for school resistance.

Published by New Society it is called Deschooling Our Lives, and includes essays by John Gatto, John Holt, Grace Llewellyn, Leo Tolstoy, David Guterson, Zoe Readhead and many more, as well as an introduction by Ivan Illich.

The book is now out of print, but is widely available at libraries around North America. It is was republished in 2008 in a significantly updated and revised form by www.akpress.org – that rendition is called Everywhere, All The Time (details above).

It has also been translated into Korean and Turkish and chunks have been published and republished all over the world in a bunch of languages.
